It is opening weekend for automobile traffic in the Park. The elk and bison look haggard and gaunt due to the extreme winter conditions. It has been ten years since the Park has had so much snow. The west end of the park received an amazing 110 inches in March. Snow melt has been slow and snowstorms are still a common occurrence. more…
We are enjoying the sights in Yellowstone Park and watched 30 wolves from 4 packs. The howling of the wolves is amazing to listen to. We saw a pack of 7 coyotes a couple of times- the largest in the park. The bison are traveling on the roads because the snow is so deep. Fog, frost and light snow throughout the weekend made the park a winter wonderland. Numerous elk, antelope and bison are near the park entrance at Gardiner where there is no snow. Also saw a few big horned mountain sheep. more…
We had a wonderful time in Yellowstone Park this weekend- the last weekend for car traffic through most of the Park. The weather was mostly sunny but cool. We were surprised to see a huge grizzly bear at Elk Park. There are large herds of elk near Swan Lake Flats and the swans are there too. Every day more trumpeter swans arrive there and on the Yellowstone River through Hayden Valley. The swans are beautiful and we loved to hear them honking. The young swans are almost the same size as the parents but are a light gray with a red beak. They are so beautiful when they fly. At Hellroaring we were amazed to see a thousand head of elk on Thursday and Friday and then they were gone the rest of the weekend. There were elk all over Mammoth too. The big bulls we viewed during the rut are not visible close up. more…
Friday we entered Yellowstone Park at 4PM. The weather was cool with a light breeze, high clouds and the roads were very quiet. Right off we saw a coyote running down the side of the road. We saw a small bull elk with cows at the Madison. We viewed a large herd of about 300 elk at Hellroaring and 2 black wolves that were far. At Speciman we saw a grizzly bear walking for about a half minute and then he layed down in the grass and went to sleep. more…
The weather in Yellowstone Park was quite varied all day long. From rain to heavy snow, dry to snowy roads, thick clouds to sunshine, chilly to pleasant.
We are seeing a few bulls with cows. But most of the bulls are grouping up together. We saw a huge bull in Mammoth right at the edge of the road. We still hear bugling once in a while and saw 2 bulls sparring. We saw about 400 elk at Hellroaring with a few bulls running around and bugling. The spikes and rag horns are all mixed in too. It is wonderful to see so many elk. We saw a large group coming out of the trees at Sough Creek. more…
Yellowstone Park had great animal viewing opportunities this weekend. A bull elk was bugling at the edge of the road at Mammoth and just perfect for picture taking. We could see a yellow tag number 10 in his ear. At Hellroaring we met up with Bill and he pointed out a faraway grizzly bear. There were also about 350 elk in the valley. Several bulls were bugling and running around. Amazing! We also saw three more herds of elk with bulls of bout 30-50 each. more…
It is raining as we leave Idaho Falls early Saturday morning. Snowing lightly through Ashton and Island Park. The storm hit hard behind us but we missed the bad storm.
There is an inch or two of snow in Yellowstone National Park. There is elk along the Madison River and the bugling of the bull elk is echoing through the trees. Two mule deer bucks are also in the field with the elk but quickly leave as they hear the bugling. more…
As we arrived in Yellowstone National Park Friday afternoon we were able to view a moose along the Madison River. Alvin had a nice visit with a park ranger. We also saw elk and bison . The bull elk have their groups of cows near by. The fall colors of yellows, oranges and reds are still vibrant in many areas but with some trees fading and losing their leaves. There is a dusting of snow on Mt. Washburn and the high peaks in the Park. We saw 2 black bears near Roosevelt and another black bear near elk creek just before 7pm. We drove to Mammoth to Gardiner on the Old Stagecoach dirt road and only saw a jack rabbit. more…
